Collegiate: Both a starting and relief pitcher … also played first base and outfield …pitched 20 straight scoreless innings, 27 straight innings pitched without giving up an earned run and 23 straight innings pitched without walking a batter …6-2 record in 1961 with an ERA below 2.0 … 9-2 record in 1962 with an ERA below 2.00 … First-Team All-Southern Conference in 1961 and 1962 ... First-Team All-American by Amateur Baseball Federation becoming the first WVU player to be selected an All-American for baseball only … batted .354 for his career with four home runs … held the school’s ERA record upon graduation with a 1.69 ERA for 125 or more innings pitched … 6th all-time in strikeouts to walk ratio with a 3.01 average … also 6th all-time in single season wins with 9 - pitching in an era when the team only played 30 games a year and there wasn’t more opportunity to gain wins … Atlantic Coast Athlete of the Year in 1962 by Coach and Athlete Magazine.

Professional: Shafer was signed by the New York Yankees and pitched in the Yankee organization reaching Triple A with the Toledo Mud Hens. His career was cut short by arm problems

Personal: Graduated with honors from WVU in the College of Engineering … according to the publication “100 Years of WVU Baseball,” Shaffer is credited as the person responsible for the interlocking baseball WV emblem that the program used from 1962 to the 2010 season.
